Empty Bowls 2008

Today DaDa, MaMa and Kelly were the assigned photographers at the Empty Bowls event. (Last time we did not participate. We were in China!) We belong to a Potters Guild that hand crafts ceramic bowls throughout the year and sells them with the money going to the local homeless shelter.

It is a grand undertaking that takes the whole year and lots of help to get ready for the day event. This is the bowls area during set up.

You buy a handcrafted bowl for $15.00. You get a ticket to stand in line (just like the Depression soup lines) you get your soup (donated by various generous restaurants) in a styrofoam bowl, a bread roll and a cup of water.

We shared some snacks in the morning.

Three cashier stations ready to take your money.
The event opens at 11 am. There was a man sitting in his car since 7:30 am. He beat most of the volunteers in.

Soup station in the chapel ready for the lines and chaos.

There were 2025 bowls at the start of the event.

"Let me see, Ummmmm, I think this one feels good."

DaDa setting up a camera (in bowls area) to take photos at intervals.

"I wonder if I pull this table cloth if all the ceramic bowls will ...."

There was a silent art auction area.

There were three different TV crews covering the event.

We didn't think Kelly would be able to take a nap, but she mustered up the calmness to relax.

Kelly, DaDa & ML looking at more bowls.

There was also a Throwing Demo area. Kelly was mesmerized.

It was a long day that started for us at 6:30 am.
Kelly was very patient and stayed in her stroller for most of the event. MaMa pushed her on the roughed cobblestoned ground as she took pictures while DaDa covered other areas of the event.
Until next year!
